Publishing Explained

What a music publisher actually does, why it matters to your income, and how publishing works at HitVocals.

What are the benefits of having a music publisher?

A music publisher helps songwriters and composers get their music heard and used by others. They do this by promoting the music to record labels, film and television studios, and other music users, and by licensing the music for use in various media. A music publisher can also help with administrative tasks, such as registering copyrights and administering royalties on behalf of the songwriter or composer.

There are several benefits to working with a music publisher:

Extended Royalty Collection

A Music publisher with a global presence can collect additional royalty streams in various regions, beyond the scope of standard PROs like ASCAP. This ability allows them to collect not only performance royalties but also mechanical royalties and neighbouring rights from international markets. As a result, artists benefit from a more thorough collection process, ensuring they receive all possible income sources from their music.

Professional promotion

A music publisher has the resources and expertise to promote your music to a wide range of potential users. This can be especially helpful if you are an independent artist and don’t have the resources to do this on your own.

Licensing support

A music publisher can handle the complex process of licensing your music for use in various media, such as films, television shows, and commercials. They can also negotiate licensing fees and ensure that you are fairly compensated for the use of your music.

Administrative assistance

A music publisher can take care of administrative tasks, such as registering copyrights and collecting royalties, which can be time-consuming and confusing for independent artists.

Collaboration opportunities

A music publisher can connect you with other songwriters and composers, which can lead to new collaboration opportunities and help you build your network in the music industry.

Expertise

A music publisher has extensive knowledge of the music industry and can provide valuable guidance and advice on how to succeed as a songwriter or composer.

Networking

A music publisher has a network of industry contacts and relationships, which can be helpful in getting your music heard by the right people.

Financing

Some music publishers may provide advance payments or financing to help songwriters and composers create new music. This can be especially helpful for independent artists who may not have the financial resources to support themselves while they focus on their craft.

Legal protection

A music publisher can help protect your rights as a songwriter or composer and ensure that you are fairly compensated for the use of your music. They can also handle any legal issues that may arise, such as copyright disputes.

Marketing and promotion

A music publisher can help market and promote your music to a wider audience, through tactics such as social media marketing, radio promotions, and public relations efforts. This can help increase the visibility and success of your music.
