Why Are Some Vocals Priced Higher Than Others?

Our artists set their own prices

Here is an honest explanation of what goes into them and why the prices can vary…

At HitVocals we work with a wide range of clients - from hobbyist producers looking for budget-friendly vocals to A-list DJs who regularly invest thousands in premium vocal performances.

Understandably, the price of some vocals can seem steep at first glance, so we want to shed some light on why vocalists set their prices the way they do…

The Costs Involved In Producing A Vocal

Creating a professional-quality vocal is no small task. Vocalists often invest significant time, money and resources into their craft and the recording process. Here is a breakdown of the typical costs they incur:

  • Studio Time. Many vocalists rent professional recording studios to ensure top-tier audio quality, which can cost anywhere from €50 to €500+ per session, depending on the studio’s calibre.
  • Engineering and Mixing. After recording, vocals are passed through a process of engineering and mixing to make them studio-ready. This takes a good amount of time, and hiring skilled engineers can be a substantial investment, often costing hundreds per track.
  • Co-Writers. In many cases, creating a vocal involves collaboration. There could be two or three co-writers who also deserve a share of the income from the sale. This shared revenue needs to be factored into the vocal’s final price.
  • Commission and Taxes. Many artists have managers who take a cut of their income, or have platform commissions to pay, such as the HitVocals commission on vocal sales. Many also need to pay tax or VAT on those sales. All of this has to be factored in when deciding on a price.

Why Prices Need To Reflect Value

Behind every professional vocal is a vocalist who has spent years honing their craft. This often includes vocal training, songwriting expertise and industry knowledge. These artists bring not just their voices but also their unique creativity, experience and brand to the table, which adds immense value to the final product.

Behind every great vocal is a professional singer who has invested heavily in their equipment, studio, training and time to make a living from their craft.

Fair pricing ensures they can continue creating and offering their best work to producers like you. Every voice on our platform belongs to a real person - we never accept fully AI-generated vocals, and you can read our open letter on human artists if you want the full reasoning behind that.

The Potential Of A Great Vocal

For producers, investing in a quality vocal can be transformative. The right vocal can give a song its identity, connect with listeners and create opportunities far beyond the original release.

A great song can:

  • Launch a career. A standout track with a standout vocal can be the record that gets people to take notice. It can open doors to labels, collaborations, management, bookings and new audiences, helping to elevate a producer from relative obscurity to a recognised name.
  • Generate significant revenue. A successful song can continue generating income long after its initial release through streaming royalties, downloads, sync and licensing opportunities, performance royalties and more. Crucially, AI-generated vocals may not be eligible for royalties, neighbouring rights or certain licensing opportunities. Investing in a genuine human performance can therefore help protect the commercial potential of a release.
  • Boost exposure through live performances. When artists perform at clubs, festivals, shows and on tour, they put the song in front of real audiences. A strong vocal can make a track more memorable and help turn a studio release into a live moment, creating additional exposure, new listeners and further opportunities.
  • Protect your reputation. Your music represents you. In an increasingly AI-driven landscape, producers need to think carefully about the quality and authenticity of the vocals they put their name behind. Low-quality, generic or obviously AI-generated vocals can make a track feel cheap, damage credibility and weaken the reputation a producer has worked hard to build. A professional human performance shows that you care about the quality of your music and the standard associated with your name.

Pricing Questions

The things producers ask us most often about what vocals cost and how to pay for them.

Who sets the price of a vocal?

The artist does. HitVocals does not set or cap prices. Every vocalist decides what their own work is worth, based on their circumstances and what it cost them to produce.

Why are some vocals so much more expensive than others?

Because the costs behind them differ. A full-length exclusive topline recorded in a professional studio, mixed by an engineer and split between several co-writers carries far more cost than a short non-exclusive hook.

What is the cheapest way to buy a vocal?

Non-exclusive vocals are the most affordable route, starting from as little as 20 euros, and shorter vocals cost less than full songs. If you would like to hear the quality before spending anything, our free vocal sample pack is available to download.

Can I negotiate the price of a vocal?

Yes. Our offers system lets you make an offer rather than paying the listed price, so it is always worth asking if a vocal sits just outside your budget.

Can I pay for a vocal in instalments?

Yes. Klarna, iDEAL and PayPal are all available at checkout, and Klarna lets you spread the cost of a vocal over instalments rather than paying the full amount up front.

What is the difference between exclusive and non-exclusive pricing?

An exclusive vocal can only be purchased one time, and if you buy it, it belongs to you and nobody else. A non-exclusive vocal is much cheaper but can be purchased by other producers too. See more details on our non-exclusive vocals here.

Does HitVocals take royalties from my release?

HitVocals takes a small commission on every vocal sold. This comes out of the artist’s share and is not added to the overall price of the vocal. We do not take any other additional royalties, such as from future master or publishing income.

Are any of the vocals AI-generated?

No. We never accept fully AI-generated vocals, and part of what you are paying for is the human performance behind the take. Our open letter on human artists explains our position in full.
